UX and Photography

The Australian Army needed to refresh their website to provide information to the public about operations that were underway and to highlight some of their amazing people. The website needed an updated design and needed to be simple and easy to navigate.

I worked as the primary UX designer on the project and worked closely with Army stakeholders to define the experience they wanted their visitors to experience. I held requirements gathering workshops with stakeholders at various levels and different parts of the organisation to best understand their needs, and also reviewed competitor/comparator sites to identify established techniques to provide information that is owned and managed in a very large hierarchical environment.

Key activities performed:

  • Sketching
  • Wireframing
  • Prototyping
  • UI Design
  • Functional Specification
  • Competitor/Comparator review

I worked with the Army to sketch out some example user flows and understand the story being told by the website, this allowed a number of page templates and an information architecture to be created which facilitated a large number of content owners and creators throughout the organisation.

Prototypes of each template were created and tested with different units and areas to ensure they were fit for purpose and then a full set of wireframes were created to form the basis of our visual design efforts. I worked closely with our visual designers to create a website that was both beautiful and usable and we created a functional specification so that the developers were able to make our vision come to life.

The end result was a greatly improved user experience and a website which was able to be implemented and recognised throughout the Army as a great platform to move forward and share the stories of their amazing work in Australia and abroad.
